As part of the activities of Yenisey Siberia SEC, the STEM-project educational module has been completed at SibFU

Siberian Federal University has hosted a defence of engineering projects within the STEM-project educational module. First-year students of the School of Non-Ferrous Metals and Materials Science and the Polytechnic School, based on the knowledge gained during the semester, designed and manufactured models of catapults and wind power generators. At the final trial, teams of students demonstrated the functions of their models. The event was held within the framework of the New Education project of Yenisey Siberia world-class Scientific and Educational Centre.

Thirty student teams (150 people) studying in engineering degree programs – thermal power engineering and heat engineering, mechatronics, robotics, design and technological support for machine-building industries, CDIO metallurgy, mechanical engineering, technological machines and equipment – took part in the trials.

In the case of the generator, the jury evaluated overall reliability of the design, the efficiency of power generation, and the stability of operation: the model was started twice, each time it should work for a minute. As for the catapult, the important indicators, in addition to strength, were aimed firing and range adjustment, as well as the speed of the projectiles.

The projects of the contestants were evaluated not only by lecturers of vocation-related subjects, but also by potential employers: representatives of Polyus Krasnoyarsk JSC, Elnis LLC, and Krastsvetmet Plant (Gulidov Krasnoyarsk Non-Ferrous Metals Plant)

“Now all the subjects we have are theoretical, but here the opportunity to independently study something new, to improvise. They gave a task, materials, a place to work. Then we used knowledge in any subjects. We also just had the Technologies of Personal Growth course, it is not related to this test, but it was useful from the point of view of team work,” said Marcel Palamarchuk, a student of the Polytechnic School of SibFU.

Outside of the main competition, students of the Minor Engineering Academy also presented their works. This Academy is a program preparing for admission to engineering degree programs of Siberian Federal University, implemented at the School of Non-Ferrous Metals and Materials Science. Secondary schools from Sosnovoborsk, Kuragino, Minusinsk and Krasnoyarsk sent their teams to the competition.
