Scientists of the SEC “Yenisey Siberia” have developed the structure of an ideal light absorber

Scientists of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed a new light control structure that allows it to be completely absorbed. The development can be used to create optical devices. The research work was carried out within the framework of one of the priority areas of activity of the SEC “Yenisey Siberia” – new industrial technologies. The results of the study are published in the journal Photonics.

The developed optical structure can be used in solar energy, where it is important to convert sunlight into electricity as efficiently as possible. Thanks to its design, which includes mirrors, liquid crystals and gold nanoparticles, it is possible to create innovative optical materials and devices, such as, for example, an ideal one hundred percent light absorber.

“The proposed structure for controlling light at the micro level allows light waves to be absorbed by 100%, which makes it an ideal light absorber. This characteristic is a key aspect for improving the efficiency of photodetectors, sensors, lasers and other devices,” said Natalia Rudakova, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Researcher at the Laboratory of Photonics of Molecular Systems at the L.V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS.

The discovery of Krasnoyarsk scientists can be an important step in the development of solar energy.
