Sarydasay deposit coal terminal is included in the Russian land-use plan

The Russian government has approved changes to the land-use planning scheme of the Russian Federation in the field of federal transport (rail, air, sea, inland water transport) and federal highways. The new version of the document includes the plans for construction of the coal terminal on the basis of the Sarydasay coal deposit with a capacity of up to 4.5 million tons per year.

The new coal terminal will be used for shipment and transportation of the coal produced during the development of the West Taimyr industrial cluster by Severnaya Zvezda company. The deposit is located on the Taimyr Peninsula, 120 km South-East of Dixon. As part of the first stage, a cargo sea terminal will be built that will serve sea vessels with a cargo capacity of up to 70 tons. The terminal and the field will be connected by a road of about 60 km.

Being a part of the Yenisey Siberia Comprehensive Investment Project, the Sarydasay coal deposit development project is one of the most promising projects in the country in the field of Arctic coal production. The resource potential of the deposit is more than 5 billion tons. As part of the project, it is planned to build on the peninsula the West Taimyr industrial cluster for the production of coal concentrates from the coking coal. The capacity of the cluster is going to be 5 million tons per year and it will imply the possibility to expand the capacity to 10 million tons per year. The cluster will include an open-pit coal mine, a deep processing plant, a residential town that provides all the necessary infrastructure for housing builders and workers, and auxiliary facilities of the life support complex.

Currently, the design of the main objects is being completed. This year, it is planned to submit the documents for state environmental assessment, to submit project documentation for the General Board of State Expert Review, to start preparatory work, and to build a support base.

The project will make a significant contribution to the development of Taimyr Dolgan-Nenets municipal district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, create new jobs, contribute to the development of infrastructure, and ensure the loading of the Northern sea route.

Director General of Yenisey Siberia Development Corporation Sergei Ladyzhenko considers the project implementation rate as high. “The port’s presence in federal documents indicates the attention of the federal authorities to the project, and we see the activity on the part of the investors. This summer Severnaya Zvezda company plans to enter the project site and to start the land development,” – Sergei Ladyzhenko said.
