Rosneft expands cooperation with the participants of the Yenisey Siberia SEC for the implementation of a forest climatic project

An agreement was signed under the 7th Eastern Economic Forum between Rosneft Oil Company and Siberian Federal University, a participant of the Yenisey Siberia SEC, on the implementation of research and development (R&D) within the framework of methodological support for the implementation of a comprehensive forest climatic project in the Krasnoyarsk Region.

The project has been approved by the President of the Russian Federation and it involves a whole range of forestry measures with a total absorption potential of 10 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

The research project will be implemented under the approved roadmap for the development of cooperation between Rosneft and the government of the Krasnoyarsk Region, which provides for the attraction of scientific and educational organizations to the region to assess and unlock the potential of carbon sequestration by Siberian forests.

The forest climatic project in the Krasnoyarsk Region provides, in particular, for the development of a concept for the creation of a Carbon Research Center (carbon landfill) to monitor the concentration of greenhouse gases and improve methods for assessing their absorption by the forests of the region.

it is also planned to develop a methodological basis for constructing mathematical models of balance, as well as a prototype of a software package within the framework of research that will allow Rosneft specialists to develop measures to increase the absorption of greenhouse gases by various types of ecosystems.

The forest is a natural sink of greenhouse gases and an effective decarbonization tool. Rosneft traditionally pays special attention to the issues of reforestation and forest conservation. About 9.3 million seedlings of trees of various breeds were planted by the company and its subsidiaries according to the results of 2021.

Rosneft 2030: Reliable Energy and Global Energy Transition Strategy is a key component of the company’s long-term environmental agenda. The strategy’s priorities include reducing the carbon footprint through measures of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and using the potential of natural carbon sequestration.
