A communication system using drones has been created in the Yenisei Siberia REC

Specialists from the Siberian State University of Science and Technology named after M.F. Reshetnev (SibGU), which is part of the Yenisei Siberia Research Center, have developed a hybrid communication structure using stratospheric drones designed for the northern territories of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The system will help to implement major investment projects in the region.

According to scientists, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory there are problems in organizing stable communications on more than half of its area. This creates obstacles to the implementation of large-scale projects, including Vostok Oil, coal mining in the Dickson area and navigation along the Northern Sea Route.

The system developed by scientists and students of Reshetnev University combines space, stratospheric and terrestrial communication technologies. Edkham Akbulatov, Rector of SibGU, said that unmanned aerial vehicles operating in the stratosphere at an altitude of 25-30 kilometers will become a key element of the new communication structure. They will complement existing satellite groupings and terrestrial networks, providing the necessary coverage in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

“Without a stable connection, it is impossible to talk about safe navigation of ships or stable operation of equipment in industrial sectors. Our project aims to create an environment for the implementation of digital solutions even in the most inaccessible places. The project has already received the support of key partners, including Glonass JSC,” said Edkham Akbulatov.

The world-class scientific and educational center “Yenisei Siberia” was established in 2019. It is an interregional association initiated by the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republics of Khakassia and Tuva. The participants of the REC include 28 scientific and educational organizations and enterprises of the real sector of the economy.
